Introduction
The Network of African Medical Librarians (NAML) in collaboration with the Association for Health Information and Libraries in Africa (AHILA), is pleased to announce the availability of an NAML-AHILA Scholarship to enable librarians in H3Africa institutions to attend a skills development workshop titled ‘Information Skills Across the Research Lifecycle’ scheduled to take place 13-16 March, 2020 in Nairobi, Kenya.
The workshop, along with travel and lodging for participants is being sponsored by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) H3Africa Common Fund and organized by the U.S National Library of Medicine (NLM)
1. Objectives of the Program
The objectives of the skills acquisition and mentorship program are to:
· plan a Continuous Professional Development (CPD) training workshop for the librarian’s/health information professionals in H3Africa institutions;
· empower librarian’s /health information professionals from H3Africa institutions with skills to support researchers and educators through health information management and provision;
· enhance the capacity of librarians’ in H3Africa institutions to locate, retrieve and use health information to support their work.
· mentor junior librarian’s/health information professionals in H3Africa institutions.
With these objectives in mind, the NAML - AHILA Executive Board will welcome applications from librarians’ / information professionals from H3Africa institutions.  Applicants for the scholarship are required to observe all of the conditions, and any application that is not in compliance will not be assessed.
2. Workshop description /Contents
The workshop will equip participants with skills in the following thematic areas:
1.     Creating and managing research portfolios
2.     Navigate the scientific publishing landscape
3.     Big data analytics
4.     Introduction to literature searching for systematic reviews
5.     Bibliometrics
6.     Citation and reference management
7.     Advance literature searching and search strategies
3. Audience:
Eligible participants for this workshop are junior and middle level librarians in H3Africa institutions across the continent (Africa).
4. Eligibility Criteria
• Applicants for scholarship for the NAML-AHILA workshop must be currently working in a medical/health sciences library in an H3Africa institution.
• Application must be made only on the official application form
• Applicants must comply with all requirements regarding length of application as stated in the application form.
All applications will be considered in confidence, judged on their own merits of the case submitted by the applicant. The following criteria would be used in assessing each application received:
• The number of years the applicant has been working as a health information professional in a health sciences / medical library
• How does the applicant expect to benefit from attending the workshop?
• How does the applicant intend to utilize the skill acquired at the workshop?
5. Terms of acceptance by the scholarship winner:
• The NAML-AHILA Executive reserve the right to carry out checks as necessary on the identity and status of applicants.
• Applicants will be responsible for satisfying any visa requirements stipulated by the country  where the workshop will be hosted (Kenya).
• Applicants will provide evidence of necessary travel documents and arrangements at least thee-four weeks before the event.
• Successful applicants will be required to provide a written report of their experience in attending the workshop as a scholarship winner.

Call for applications for Research4Life MOOC

Research4Life is thrilled to announce the launch of a MOOC (Massive Open Online Course) that will equip existing and future users of the Research4Life programmes (Hinari, AGORA, OARE, ARDI and GOALI) with the knowledge and skills required to access and use the information efficiently. A call for applications to attend the MOOC is now open. The Research4Life MOOC was funded by the Elsevier Foundation and Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations.

Who should apply?

The target audience for this MOOC is aligned with Research4Life’s eligibility criteria. Eligible institutions include national universities, professional schools (in medicine, agriculture, pharmacy, public health, socio-legal studies, engineering, etc.), research institutes, teaching hospitals and healthcare centers, government offices, national libraries, agricultural extension centers and local non-governmental organizations.

This course was developed for librarians, information professionals, IT specialists, researchers, academics, lecturers, educators, students including graduates and post graduates, and professionals, such as doctors, policy makers, extensionists, lawyers, social workers and statisticians in the eligible countries and institutions.

Participants are expected to spend on average six to eight hours per week on lessons and activities, such as contributing to discussion forums and webinars.

What do you get from this course?

The Research4Life MOOC follows a modular structure, which allows participants to study their area of interest throughout a five-week period. The course covers topics relevant across all Research4Life programmes, such as the scholarly communication landscape, information literacy skills, advocacy and capacity development strategies. Additionally, it provides discipline-specific information for Hinari, AGORA, OARE, ARDI and GOALI.

Participants of the course will be provided with a Certificate of Attendance after completing the exam at the end of the course. Those who pass the exam with a grade of at least 7.0, will receive a Certificate of Achievement.

How to apply?

The course is free of charge and is offered in English over a five-week period. It will take place between 11 November to 15 December 2019.

To apply for the course, please complete the registration form by 31 October 2019. Applicants will be informed about their application by 5 November 2019.

Research4Life MOOC will be repeated in the coming year and the dates will be announced in early 2020. For further information, please contact us at AIMS@fao.org.

What is included in the course?

Module 1: Scholarly communication and Research4Life: This module provides an overview on scholarly communication, the publishing landscape, key concepts about Research4Life including the details about the partnership,, programmes’ coverage, eligibility criteria, and registration. Lessons included in this module are:
Lesson 1.1: Scientific landscape
Lesson 1.2: Research assessment and bibliometrics
Lesson 1.3: Research4Life

Module 2: Discovery and re-use of scholarly literature: This module covers key concepts of information literacy skills and competencies, including academic ethics, licensing and academic collaboration tools. Lessons included in this module are:
Lesson 2.1: Identifying information sources
Lesson 2.2: Using information resources
Lesson 2.3: Intellectual property and copyright - Ethics and plagiarism
Lesson 2.4: Citing, reference management and collaboration tools

Module 3: Discipline-specific browsing and searching: This module describes the five Research4Life programmes (Hinari, AGORA, OARE, ARDI, GOALI) in detail, including how to conduct discipline specific search, an introduction to Summon to search across programmes and the bibliometric analysis tools: Scopus and Dimensions, which are provided within Research4Life. Lessons included in this module are:

Lesson 3.3: OARE: Research in the Environment
Lesson 3.4: ARDI: Research for Development and Innovation
