My plans for UI library —New Librarian

January 12, 2017 Laolu Harolds

NEWLY appointed University of Ibadan Librarian, Dr (Mrs) Helen Olubukunola Komolafe-Opadeji, has promised to turn the institution’s library around for the better, saying her innovativeness would propel the library to greater heights
Dr Komolafe-Opadeji, who is the sixth substantive Librarian, disclosed that Information Literacy Skill, which her predecessors had not really promoted, would be one of her priorities.

“We are in the information age. Studies have shown that there is a paradigm shift from print to electronics. One of my priorities, therefore, will be that the university community fully benefits from the electronic information resources that we have substantially subscribed to, by making the knowledge available and facilitating accessibility,” she said.
The new Librarian, who noted that the premier university had expended so much money towards accessibility and utilisation of electronic information resources, said that she would ensure massive in-house training for the staff of the library, which will in turn impact the entire university community with the new skill.
Besides, she promised to resuscitate bindery section of the library, which she noted could generate millions of naira for the university in terms of Internally Generated Revenue (IGR)

The bindery section of the library could rake in millions of naira in one academic session. For instance, if all postgraduate students are directed to bind their theses and dissertations in our bindery section at the rate of N500 per copy, in five places per a student, you can imagine how much we will make for the university,” she stressed, pointing out that library services are capital-intensive, and hence  the need to look inwards.

Until her appointment, the new librarian was a Deputy University Librarian and a member of the university’s Library Management Committee.

She joined the services of the University of Ibadan as a Librarian in 1990, serving in different professional and administrative capacities until her new appointment.
