The African Library and Information Associations and Institutions (AfLIA) requests applications
for a full - time position of Research Coordinator in the organisation.
Description of Work
The AfLIA Research Coordinator will be responsible for managing research-related activities for AfLIA. The Research Coordinator will design, implement, and analyze projects that utilize multiple methods and span countries across Africa. In addition, the Research Coordinator will serve as a liaison between AfLIA and key project, library, policy, and other stakeholders in support of AfLIA’s research mission. The Research Coordinator will report to AfLIA Projects Director.
The primary responsibility will be the Africa Data Project, in partnership with TASCHA. For this project, the Research Coordinator will report to TASCHA through the Projects Director of AfLIA for the successful implementation of this multi-year activity. In addition, the Research Coordinator through the Projects Director of AfLIA will undertake research activities that will support the organization advance its multiple work streams.
Responsibilities
Below are the responsibilities for the Research Coordinator:
Research Management
·         Engage with library stakeholders in Africa and other locations
·         Liaise with non-library project stakeholders, including government and NGO officials
·         Support field work activities, including
o    Training of data collection teams
o    Develop strategies for and conduct pilot testing
o    Oversee recruitment of field researchers
o    Support preparation of logistics for fieldwork and other research activities
o    Manage data collection processes
o    Oversee fieldwork quality control mechanisms
o    Spend time in the field for quality control purposes
·         Be responsible for managing and organizing AfLIA data, including
o    Strategically planning data repositories
o    Data cleaning/entry
o    Safekeeping and protection of data
·         Provide other administrative support as needed
Research Activities
·         Contribute to strategic research decision making for AfLIA
·         Assist with work plan, design of data collection methods and instruments
·         Conduct desk research
·         Conduct fieldwork
·         Develop research reports
·         Contribute to dissemination of results
Required Skills and Expertise
·         At least an MPhil/MSc with a minimum of five (5) years' working experience in
o    managing large projects
o    managing people in remote locations
o    designing, conducting, and managing social science research using multiple methods
o    working with low income/underserved populations
·         Knowledge and understanding of libraries
·         Familiarity with varying cultural and socio-economic differences across Africa
·         Excellent verbal and written English language communication skills
·         Sensitivity towards cultural and traditional practices
·         A team player
Salary
Not less than $30,000 per annum and negotiable depending on skills and experience
